3D Printing Silicone in a Gel Support Matrix

Context: 
3D printing of soft materials has gained significant attention in soft robotics, medical devices, and tissue engineering. Traditional methods require heated beds or support structures, which limit the complexity of fabricated parts. Printing silicone into a gel support matrix offers a way to build complex, unsupported structures while maintaining material integrity.

Objective:
To develop a 3D printing method where silicone is printed within a gel support matrix.

Description:
In this project, silicone materials such as Ecoflex and Dragon Skin will be extruded directly into a gel support matrix, allowing freeform fabrication without the need for a heated build plate. The approach enables the creation of complex, unsupported geometries and opens new opportunities for fabricating soft robotic components, medical devices, and customised structures. Students will explore material selection, process optimisation, and the characterisation of printed structures.
